The Non-Slip Secret: Why Travertine's Natural Finish Makes It the Ideal Pool Deck Paver

Why Travertine Pool Decks Matter

A pool deck should be more than just attractive—it must be functional, safe, and comfortable. Travertine checks every box:

  • The porous, natural surface gives excellent traction, keeping the area safe even in wet weather and during pool activities.
  • Cool-to-the-touch stone lets you walk and lounge comfortably, even on the hottest days.
  • Custom design flexibility makes travertine a standout choice for any poolside aesthetic, from classic to contemporary.

Our Proven Process

Our team has developed a proven process that helps keep your travertine deck locked in place for years to come.

  • We soil inject every travertine deck and the product we use minimises the PVR (Potential Vertical Rise) to 1” of expansion.  Most of our working areas consist of a heavy clay soil where it’s not uncommon to have 4-6 inches of expansion.
  • A concrete perimeter beam is installed along the outer edge of the travertine deck to lock everything in place.
  • Filter fabric is installed under the compacted base to help minimize the risk of the base material from settling as the soil beneath expands and contracts.
  • The sub base under all of our travertine patios consists of 8 inches of compacted flex base and 2 inches of manufactured sand.

Safety Tips and Maintenance Insights

  • Regularly sweep and rinse your pool deck to keep debris and organic growth at bay.
  • Inspect for signs of wear, pitting, or spalling, which are preventable with proper care and early repairs.
